One of the biggest doctrinal mix-ups in the church, in my opinion, is the confusion on the role of grace vs. works. Fundamentally, this indicates confusion on what is a gift vs. what is reward, and yet the Bible speaks of both - and Christians often confuse both and end up teaching a muddy gospel that says "salvation is by grace...but you have to do works".
This is a guy you've probably not heard of, but he's very good, and gives a great teaching on reading the Bible with the understanding of the difference between the roles of grace and works:

Thank you brother...My initiation into the Kingdom came via a church like that. It wasnt until after years of that indoctrination that I caught them lying about something that I was able to escape! In any event, speaking with my brother a while back he coined this situation we were under as "sin managers". That theme stands out to me as there are many who justify salvation with evidence of works, often mis-interpreting James.
I do believe this is one thing many unsaved dont understand. They think "Oh I gotta give up stuff if I'm a christian" and they end up not accepting or failing as the effort to "give up" is done in their own strength.
Thank you again for the reminder of His grace. I'll watch the video later
