Raised in the Protestant side of things, I never really understood the “Blessing” from a Priest. Seems sort of “gimmicky” to me – dare I say almost flippant -- that God would need to honor a blessing from something not alive?

Yes, kjs, both these aspects disturb me.

I think what disturbs me most about this, besides the obvious fact that an inanimate object has no capacity to bless anything, is the flippant aspect. Self-identifying Christians these days seem to have no sense of sacredness. Nothing is sacred to them - not birth, not marriage, not blessing, neither the Bible nor Church. Nothing. I don't mean this against Believers with a real saving faith, but just against your average church-goer.

I agree, Gary, and it smacks too much of the image of the beast. This is not it, but it seems like a fore-runner of things to come.

I'm in agreement with all of you about this! It gave me a chill up the back when I saw the article.
