Whatif and watchmanjim,
Do a search using KJV for 'clouds'... there might be a clue there. I actually think seeing Jesus himself will be the sign of the Son of Man.

The clouds are definitely important, and mentioned a lot, as in Isaiah 19, for instance, among many other places. So the 6th Seal talks about this, for one thing.

Maybe the response of a people/nation will be the sign?
Luke 11:29-32 KJV
[29] And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. [30] For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation. [31] The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. [32] The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. …

I keep thinking about the Luke 11 passage about the sign of the "Son of Man". It says just as Jonah was a sign to Ninevah, who repented - the Son of Man would be a sign to "this generation" - and the audience was Jews.
"This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.
30 For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this(evil) generation.
31 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them(this evil generation): for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. (meaning she 'valued' Solomon)
32 The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this(evil) generation, a nd shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
Sounds like to me, that AFTER the rapture, God is going to use (certain countries) to condemn(maybe attack) it? I'm not sure who the Queen of the South is today, But Oh My Goodness! That would be a sure sign if God uses them to do that! 2 Chronicles 34 and 35 tells a tale very much like this.

But then again, close looking at Revelation 1:7 "Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also wihich pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen."
At the end of the 7 years, do we have people 'wailing' because of him? I don't think so - not at the END. The people at the END are in total rebellion. It says even then, some will not turn.
So when will EVERY EYE see him?

I came upon this specific topic via a search using "the sign of the Son of Man". Admittedly the version cited in the topic title is far from the original English used, the search led me here. It's actually something like a 'mirror mirror on the wall' thing to me. Here is the oldest existing translation in English of Matthew 24:30 : "30 And then the token of man's Son shall appear in heaven, and then all the kindreds of the earth shall wail [and then all the kindreds, or lineages, of the earth shall wail]; and they shall see man's Son coming in the clouds of heaven, with much virtue and majesty." This is not the same as saying "the sign which is the Son of Man", and though one might think it to be picky, the two different wordings in the original post also spell the difference between whether "the sign" is someone other than the Son of Man (Jesus) or not. There actually has been some writing which excels at further description of the things of Heaven, writing that doesn't minimize, nor attempt to minimize, just how great the reward is to gain (be in) Heaven.
