This is not really looking for advice (but possibly some ideas) or simply some discussion that will look at all possible options. I was floored, completely astounded, by some news I just received about an hour ago.
Before going into details about my situation, I will admit I have become convinced that something will happen this year – possibly even the rapture… so it is possible this is all a moot point; cause everything is drastically going to change within the next six months. So that should indicate, how much this news shook me, for I thought I could continue on “regular life” for the next few months without any major change taking place.
Allow me to lay the ground work for this mini-crises I am now facing. Back in Fall of 2003, I was laid off my job of over 15 years. Two days later, I learned I could retain my job and all benefits I had accrued over the years – but I would have to move out of State. I chose the move option and ended up in the DC Metro Area of the country. This area is one of the most expensive areas in the country. As an example, a decent, nice place to live will run an individual roughly 2100 a month. I made the move and got my old house sold all within around six weeks. After living in the area over a year, I decided that shelling out 2100 in rent each month did not make sense, because you had no ownership. Through a series of events (that God was definitely part of) – I learned another Guy was in a similar situation – where he wanted to be fairly close to work, but could not really afford a place on his own. To shorten this history a bit, we became housemates in a very nice two bedroom town-home. We became close friends, and his family actually kind of adopted me as member of their family (his family is about 2 hours away). We had ups and downs – but basically did well as housemates – kept bills paid – living in a nice neighbor fairly close to both our job locations.
Fast forward to 2010, and we were still good housemates – however, I learned I had Leukemia. Luckily, it was caught in the Acute Stage and with treatment I have been in remission for several years. Because of my condition, I was given a medical Leave to perform my work from a Remote Position (or from Home). My housemate still needed a close place to commute to his job; so we decided to continue on as Housemates; even though technically, I could move anywhere in the country (even back to my home state of Texas).
Fast Forward to about an hour ago; I was just contacted by my housemate; that he was given an opportunity to apply for a position in his company down in Florida. He made the official cut as one of the candidates for the transfer and They will be doing an Face to Face interview with Him next week. If he passes the interview portion, it sounds like the position will be his. According to him, he was asked when he could take up residence down there and his response before winter time, at least by Fall.
Why all this matters? Even if I cut back on all non-essential services, and cut expenses in other ways – I could spend maybe another two months here on my own. Then I would either need to have another paying house mate – or I would need to sell and move.
Technically, the best option would be to move to a cheaper area. But the doctor (who supports my medical exemption is here) as well as my cancer doctor who monitors my remission status. Plus getting the house ready for sale – may take a while – since there are a few items that require corrected.
As stated, I learned all this just over an hour ago, and am unsure which direction I should jump so to speak.
So any thoughts or ideas – people would like to share?
One tempting thought is keep the status quo with the expectation of being out of here within six months…. BUT I will not do that….
Also, any possible options I am missing?
