I spoke with a botanist who had a great deal of experience working for a municipal department in the use and care of trees shubs and plants. He told me something very interesting about the red algae blooms (all algae in fact):
Aside from a 'supernatural' event, the turning of water into what appears to be partially coagulated blood can be caused by increased red algae blooms.
These algae growths increase when there is a high phosphorus content in the water.
They deplete the oxygen content in the water, and this is what causes all the flora and fauna to die out.

Yup my husband works at a water treatment plant. Fertilizers, laundray detergents, shampoos, and similar reak havoc on the water. Especially in drier and hotter areas because they use more fertilizer.

You put "phosphorus" in bold, yardstick, and my memory is telling me I read something here in another thread regarding phosphorus that was very interesting, but I can't recall which thread.

You put "phosphorus" in bold, yardstick, and my memory is telling me I read something here in another thread regarding phosphorus that was very interesting, but I can't recall which thread. Although I had not said so, I indirectly alluded to those passages of Revelation which indicate the waters being turned into blood.
I have been of the opinion that God prefers to work within the physical laws he has created; and therefore, it is prudent to attempt to find a physical explanation for a prophetic event; and failing to find such an explanation then allows for a 'supernatural' / 'miracle' explanation.
So, based upon the above, I may hypothesize that meteors with high phosphorus content may be the explanation for the relevant passages in Revelation; namely, the 1/3 of waters turning to blood in Rev 8:8-9; and the making of the sea and other waters into blood per Revelation 16:3-4.
I suspect that the 1/3 indicates impact in possibly the mediterranean, or atlantic ocean, and the 16:3-4 may indicate the pacific, since I suspect the pacific and indian oceans make up about 2/3 of the large water surface area.
