Can "In Christ" be seen as a qualifier in 1 Cor. 15:22
hereami - Thank you for the great questions. I’ll respond to your post in sections. In this post I'll respond to the "In Christ" question.
Please note - my response is to all readers - I am not addressing hereami specifically when I use the term "You."
1Co 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
I won’t reiterate what hereami wrote, because I believe he effectively captured the basic argument that the “In Christ” is a qualifier for the “all” that will be made alive. This is a common argument and one of the main ways that are used to make the All mean something other than All. When you encounter this argument, there are three different approaches with which to respond:
1. Accept that "In Christ" is a qualifier and submit that All will eventually be “In Christ”
The conclusion of this passage in 1 Cor 15:28 is that God will be All in All. So it can be assumed that All will be In Christ who is also In God. This is a bit of a simple way of dealing with this issue, but I would not want to stand solely on this solution - so let's continue.
2. Paul says the same thing 10 different ways to make sure we can’t miss the point
Paul says the same thing a variety of ways. Most of those ways do not include the words “In Christ” and therefore those sentences could not be argued to have that same qualifier. Since the term “In Christ” could be seen as a qualifier or as a method (like being in Adam could be seen as a qualifier or a method), and since Paul uses other terms that do not include the term “In Christ” - we must conclude that the term is not used as a qualifier but as a method. By Method, we mean - the means by which something happens. Death happened via the means of Adam's sin. Life, by the means of Christ's righteous act.
1Co 15:21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
death came by man <--> resurrection came by man
Rom 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
by one man sin entered into the world (removing the In Adam “qualifier”)
Rom 5:15 But not as the offense, so also is the free gift. …..
Offense <--> free gift (also no qualifier)
Rom 5:15 For if through the offense of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
offense of one causes many to be dead <--> on one man Jesus grace abounded to many
Rom 5:16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offenses unto justification.
judgement by one to condemnation <--> free gift by one to justification
Rom 5:17 For if by one man's offense death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
one man’s offense death reigned <--> one man work brings righteousness of grace and gift of righteousness reigns
Rom 5:18 Therefore as by the offense of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
offense of one all men condemned to judgement <--> righteousness of one free gift of justification of life
Rom 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
one man’s disobedience made many sinners <--> one man’s obedience made many righteous
Rom 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
Rom 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
These last two verses just prove the point again that grace was abounding even stronger as the sin increased - to the exaggerated point that sin reigned unto death - So that grace might reign through righteousness - unto eternal life.
Let’s add our original verse:
1Co 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
Paul is going through great effort here to make the message clear. He says it 10 ways! Only one of those includes the term “In Christ”. To take that one verse and make it shape all the other verses does not seem appropriate. Especially in light of the fact that the plain reading of 15:22 is that in the same way all die in Adam, we all live in Christ. This is the method of death and life.
Furthermore, the 9 other renderings that Paul uses demonstrate completely that this is not the condition, but the method. The free gift, the life, the resurrection are due to the righteous work of Christ. How many different ways could Paul say this before we accepted it?
3. There are simply too many other verses in scripture that confirm the "All"
But just in case this is still not convincing. Let's look at some confirming scripture. I'm going to overdo it a bit to make a point. A person may see some verses that I reference and feel that that verse doesn't apply, that's fine, ignore it and continue on with all the others. And if these are not sufficient - there are more....

hereami - Thank you for the great questions. I’ll respond to your post in sections. In this post I'll respond to the "In Christ" question.
