Can anyone shed some light on how the Jews reconcile their Hebrew or Spiritual calendar? Because it would appear to me that they cannot agree. I have two sites I use to look at days and they couldn't be farther apart. Let's look at where the 1st of Nissan falls...
1. Toracalendar.com - This site says the Spiritual New Year (1st of Nissan) is Sunday March 18 at Sunset thru Monday March 19 Sunset. (new moon crescent visible at sunset 18th)
2. Hebcal.com - This site says the 1st of Nissan is Saturday March 17. No indication if that means sunset 16th to sunset 17th or sunset 17th to sunset 18th. No mention of the moon phase.
Now, this means that there are, at the very least, 48 hours difference, and possibly as much as 72 hours difference between the two! How can this be? I would guess that they are supposed to be looking at the moon phase to correctly determine the change of the month. It would appear that Torahcalendar.com would be correct as they specifically cite the new moon occurring at sunset on March 18. However...
The new moon does not appear on March 18 at sunset. Every site I look at shows it occurring on March 17. And if we specifically look at Jerusalem, this is true.
www.timeanddate.com/moon/phases/israel/jerusalem
I have to assume that this site and others like it are using actual astronomical calculations/observations to determine the precise correct time of the moon phases.
Incidentally, the time this new moon will occur is 3:11 pm on 3/17. Or in EST: 9:11 am. That's just incredibly interesting to me.
So, from what I can see, Torahcalendar.com is just wacky, but I know a lot of watchers use this site as a guide to the Hebrew spiritual calendar.
Any help with this discrepancy is greatly appreciated.
