I only came across this term recently.
What does it refer to, and how is it being used?

It is a term for Christians who support Israel...their right to their land, etc. It is usually not used in a positive way though, so some assume that being a Christian Zionist is bad.

I've heard the term Zionists used by the Iranians referring to Israel and the leadership there, the Jews right to the land, etc. Christian Zionism would be those who support Israel and their right to the land.

Zionism is the national movement of the Jewish people that supports the re-establishment of a Jewish homeland in the territory defined as the historic Land of Israel (roughly corresponding to Canaan, the Holy Land, or the region of Palestine).
Christian Zionism is a belief among some Christians that the return of the Jews to the Holy Land and the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 were in accordance with Bible prophecy.
Amillennialism, in Christian eschatology, involves the rejection of the belief that Jesus will have a literal, thousand-year-long, physical reign on the earth. This rejection contrasts with premillennial and some postmillennial interpretations of chapter 20 of the Book of Revelation.
Christians who are Amillennialist or Postmillennialist are almost always against Zionism and in fact many feel this is the "great deception" spoken of in Scripture -- that there is no longer a Jewish Race -- and any support of Israel is supporting the Devil.
Most Premillennialist are fully with the Camp of Christian Zionism -- and believe the return of Israel is fulfilled prophecy.
Catholic Church is primarily Amillennialism (East Orthodox Church is also Amillennialist).
