Purpose of this thread is discuss and converse about the content and context of this mini-bible! I will use external sources to assist in providing color and background. This is open for conversation and I am not opposed to going off track to diverge on other side related topics, but still will want to bring things back to this book. Overview - Inserting this from bible hub, Albert Barnes commentary notes are a favorite of mine. I suggest reading through the link as the intro is worth the time. We, His people have this tendency to wander from our Creator, Provider into rebellion. Even the animals recognize their masters.

The Lord disciplines, to no avail as the revolt will continue. The iniquity is great and there is no repentance as these are utterly corrupt. No medicine or treatment will help the body of sickness as it is rampant through the body (Israel). Interesting to me how Isaiah compares the land of Judah to a body as we are the body of Christ. Strangers invaded the land and pillaged by invaders ( Assyrian - wiki link to history info). Due to Gods mercy, He left a few alive unlike Sodom & Gomorrah. Dwell on that a little

Dwell on that a little Mike, Just wanted to add, 1: this is a vision and in such, expect symbols. 2: The idea that the city is like a House sitting in a field of food, reflects back to the previous statement of "strangers devour it", it becomes desolate. Its important to note things like: "the whole head is sick". He is not speaking of a literal head, but most likely what the Bible terms is a head. In the same book, These men did not repent or teach repentance. They corrupted their ways and made the people stumble. They could have healed their country but continued to do what they wanted. The people looked to them for guidance and sadly, they lead them astray.

Thank you mike. I love The Book of Isaiah but the reason I spend my time in Revelation is that it is much less complicated. In Revelation the reader does not need to know history or the other stuff that Isaiah includes. That being said then that book of scripture has a profound introduction comprised of 6 chapters (IMO) with chiasmi overlapping chiasmi to the "nth degree"; throughout the book, much more intensely than any other. Please consider Chapter 1 that is in about 6 or more parts as follows: and this is my best quick guess, Isa. 1-2, introduction Isa. 3-4, a sinful nation Isa. 5-6, the nation is sick Isa. 7-8, the country is desolate Isa. 1:9-10, like Sodom and Gomorrah Isa. 1:11-12, to what purpose are your sacrifices Isa. 1:13-14, no more vain oblations Isa. 1:15-16, cease to do evil Isa. 1:17-18, learn to do well Isa. 1:19-20, eat or be eaten Isa. 1:21-22, the silver has become dross Isa. 1:23-24, wicked leaders Isa. 1:25-31, judgment Just a quick overview of Chapter 1 and I think the center and emphasis is "no more vain oblations." I might be wrong on that but the chapter is simply a masterpiece of beautiful scripture.

boraddict I am aware of your love of chiasm What I am noticing more and more throughout scripture is how Israel is like the church of today. There are many apostate and false teachings where many of those who claim to be christian, believe lies and live by those. God sends His messengers but they are rejected. This sounds so very familiar to what I am noticing today in this world, the last days. Arent we (the world, the US) becoming more and more like Sodom & Gomorrah. Even terminology of sodomy is now missing from our language. It has been converted to something that does not indicate how nauseating it is to God! Vain offerings from the wicked in heart. Here Isaiah uses 'sodom & gomorrah' figuratively, as they were previously destroyed and remain to this day. This is how rotten the people Isaiah is addressing have become. As the chapter begins he is addressing those in Judah & Jerusalem. The practice the Lord instituted were devoid of heartfelt honor, respect, and fear of Him who they were offering to. They made their offerings then living in iniquity as they left making their offerings. I think verses 17 & 18 tell us what they were doing, the opposite of what is said/written. The sword was on its way ...

The sword was on its way ... The US is like Sodom: Sodom was well watered. It was fertile. They lacked no food and because of it, they were rich with trade and livestock. Yet in all their fatness, pride, self indulgence and the such were their sins. The city also was violent to others. Saying to Lot: And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
To know them was to commit sexual acts (homosexual) with them. This is why Lot offered his daughters to them. All of this exists in this country and it is getting worse. It even is no longer creeping inside Churches..but is being welcomed.

I am with you on that mike . One point that is often missed in Isaiah is that he wrote when Ephraim and Judah were divided kingdoms, about 720 BC; then sometime later Ephraim was captured and then Judah fell in about 587 BC (just going off memory). The missed part is where Isaiah addresses both kingdoms and this is introduced in each of the beginning chapters of the book. However, since he is writing for the latter days kingdoms then he is referring to Christians in Isa. 1:1 as either "Judah" or "Jerusalem". Since the nation state of Israel today contains Judah, then we Christians are Jerusalem in Verse 1. My point is that he is speaking to Israel in it's divided two kingdom condition that still exists today. This means that although the book is about the world in it's wickedness, it also and more explicitly is about Ephraim and Judah in their rebelliousness. Please notice the beginning of the Chapter as follows: "The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master’s crib, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand.” The Savior's people are Israel that are today Judah and the Christians.
