Wow that looks like a possible legitimate concern, when you consider that the New York Times provided the original article about it 36 yrs ago. Realize this may be a stretch, but just throwing this out there if we do the whole adding numbers exercise.
Many of us think that there could be a connection with Jonah and the Nineveh eclipse. I believe there are parallels. Mark Biltz mentioned that Aug. 21 is the first of Av, beginning the month of repentance according to Israel's calendar. There are other neat signs he points out that he believes God is giving (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxCAMOcq6eE).
Anyway, historians date the eclipse 6/15/763 BC. If I did the math correctly, there are 2,780 years between 763 BC and 2017. 2 + 7 + 8 = 17.
The last time the US had an eclipse with the path of totality covering the entire country, was 1776. Which is crazy in and of itself. 1 + 7 + 7 + 6 = 21.
So there is a 17 and 21. 8/21/17? May be something, may be nothing.

Just saying, the 1776 thing is a false fact, I think. The last time an eclipse crossed ONLY U.S. mainland was before the U.S. existed.

Welcome Lookuptim! Totally agree that people are asleep! Everywhere. God told us they would be😔. I can see how a God could speak to you about it. We can see so much of his heart/design in the scriptures that we didn't before. But I admit I am cautioned about applying that that verse means into the tribulation, regarding the church. If you look at the word 'thief' you will see it appear only after the cross 6x. Each time it is referencing the day of the Lord . Especially to the issues that the day of the Lord would not arrive like a thief in the night to those who been watching. I'm not convinced that I am saying that believers would be in the Tribulation. I think that is referring specifically to the Jewish people once tribulation begins. The Bible mentions several times(!) in the Old Testament and Matthew Mark and Luke and John- thief. Hey truthseeker! I think I am in agreement with you, if I understood you correctly. I have always been pre-trib. I just meant to connect it to how, as you pointed out, the Lord states through Paul and John in their epistles that those who are expecting the rapture and with it the likely simultaneous 'sudden destruction' won't be surprised when it happens since they were watching. I think there is a possible connection with what John wrote: "Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming." (1 John 2:28). Even though it seems oddly placed in Rev. 16, I'm of the belief that Jesus is warning believers (before the rapture takes place) to get ready so that we will not be ashamed at His coming, but the placement in terms of it being in the middle of the tribulation judgments does make me wonder whether it's applicable to the church (since as I said I believe the church is harpazoed out before the trib). I could be wrong, otherwise if He's coming as a thief and it is directed to Jews in the tribulation, would that verse be referencing His Second Coming in your mind? Shrink away at his coming..... today a believer has gone astray, KNOWING that time is close! I'm looking at that verse differently today. He may mean for one not to be caught in their sin.😩 |

Yes, there seems to be some confusion on the 1776 information, watchmanjim! I found conflicting information. Wikipedia says:
The August 2017 eclipse will be the first with a path of totality crossing the US's Pacific coast and Atlantic coast since 1918. Also, its path of totality makes landfall exclusively within the United States, making it the first such eclipse since the country's independence in 1776. (The path of totality of the eclipse of June 13, 1257, was the last to make landfall exclusively on lands currently part of the US.)
