Hey guys! So, I was inspired by watchmanjim to start studying Hebrew or Greek. I'm not sure where to start. I have copies of the Hebrew and Greek using Lumina, esword, and a Tanach copy online. However, I want to learn either one of the languages. So, do any of you have cheap/preferably free resources for learning these languages? I'd also like to know which one to start with. Thanks!

Hi, Beloved! That is awesome that you would learn one or both of these languages! Here is a handy reference tool that may help you--an online English-Greek/Greek-English dictionary. I use the English-French version and have been greatly helped by it, and tied to the English-French dictionary is a forum where you can find people who speak the language and can help answer translating questions. I'm hoping there is a forum connected to the Greek version, as well. Here's the link:
Source: WordReference.com, 2017.
www.wordreference.com/engr/
When you click on the link, you should see a webpage where there is a little slot for typing. If you type an English word in the slot, it will bring up a page to show that word in Greek and examples of its usage. And it does appear that there is a forum attached. I typed in the word "hello" to check it out, and down at the bottom of the page for that word are a list of some forum topics you can click on to enter the forum. From there you might be able to get to the forum home page and sign up as a member so you can ask questions and respond and so on.

Other than purchasing a few books and dictionaries, I mostly use free online sources, mainly on You-Tube. Let me see if I can find a few of them.

This is a good sight for Hebrew, It goes into a lot of depth, maybe more than you can handle quickly--if it seems like too much to get bogged down in, try some other resources, but it does have a LOT of good stuff: www.hebrew4christians.com/index.htmlThis is a good You-Tube site: and And you can also simply search on You-Tube for other video series. There are many out there, and I haven't even touched on Greek ones. When studying Greek it is much more important to specify ancient Greek rather than modern, since there is much more difference between modern Greek and ancient Greek, than modern and ancient Hebrew, since modern Hebrew is pains-takingly based on ancient Hebrew.

Once you know your letters and vowels well, there are a lot of other ways you can study, including inerlinear apps for mobile devices. I also use a Hebrew practice app on my phone.

I just got the name of the App I use on my phone--it is called Biblical Hebrew Vocabulary. But you need to learn your letters, vowels, and sounds before that one will be useful to you. There are many other useful apps available to mobile devices, so if you have one, you can search and try some different ones out.
